Flying to Europe with ETIAS

Flying to Europe with ETIAS

Starting in the last quarter of 2026, ETIAS is a new requirement for travellers who do not need a visa to visit Europe. Find out how this will affect you when travelling by air.

If you are planning to fly to any of these 30 European countries after ETIAS is introduced, you will be required to apply online for an ETIAS travel authorisation before your departure. The only way to submit your application will be directly on the official ETIAS website or through the mobile app. You can also authorise someone else to do it on your behalf.

At the airport, your ETIAS travel authorisation will be checked before you can board your flight. Remember, it will be linked to the passport you have used for your ETIAS application, so make sure to bring the same travel document with you. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to board the plane.

At the border

After landing in Europe, your ETIAS travel authorisation will be checked again at the border crossing point. You will also need to meet all other entry conditions to be allowed to cross the border.

Keep in mind that the total length of your stay across the European countries requiring ETIAS cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. This limit is cumulative across all the countries requiring ETIAS – except for Cyprus, where the 90 days are counted separately.

Transiting in Europe

If you are only stopping over in one of the 30 European countries to change flights, you will not need an ETIAS travel authorisation unless you leave the airport’s international transit area.

If you need to go through passport control to change terminals or airports to get to your connecting flight, you will need a valid ETIAS travel authorisation.

ETIAS is not currently in operation and no applications are being collected at this point.
